Chapter 19

Astra

“What about this?” I pulled out a simple black dress with a long, flowing skirt and lace along the bodice. Simple, elegant and easy to blend in. “I won’t stand out or draw attention.”

Tor tilted his head, studying it, scrunching his face, and selecting another garment from the Unseelie shop’s rack.

Vartros had permitted us to meet with the seer, and we’d departed the Guild and gone shopping while Knoxe had gone to set up a time to meet.

“How about this little number?” Of course, Tor produced the glitziest dress inside the shop, a multicolored, multi-paneled garment that screamed Versace more than the demure Alexander McQueen black dress I’d chosen.

Knoxe’s orders were not to draw attention to ourselves, and I didn’t want to disobey, not after we finally seemed to be getting along. I pushed the dress away, but Tor moved it back at me, raising a go on, try it on eyebrow at me.

“Are you trying to get me killed?” Despite my words, I ran my fingertips along the silk panels separated by thin layers of dark leather, stitched with tiny crystals, and my heart beat out of my chest and love hearts pumped out of my eyeballs like those cartoon gifs. My gaze panned the rest of the store, a cave with silk decorating the stone, vines and tree roots scaling the ceiling and walls, and even the floor. A glowing tree in the corner cast a soft light on the dresses in one corner. Dammit. Everything in here was so beautiful and otherworldly. But I needed one of these dresses to fit in and not look so human.

Tor waggled his eyebrows. “No expense spared. The Guild’s paying for it, and you get to keep it afterward.”

This was part mission, part funds generating activity, not a trip to a nightclub—although I could do with a night of dancing and fun—and the dress was not for Tor’s benefit. “I can’t waste Guild resources like that.”

“Pfft.” Tor crossed his arms. “The Guild trades with the gantii. They’re not short of a diamond, or thousands. It’s is a drop in the well compared to what they’re hiding in their vaults. Besides, the teams receives some cash to spend on missions, and we’re spending it, baby.”

Good point. Might as well make the most out of my time at the Guardians, and if that meant earning a nice, little bonus, so it was. A big middle finger to the
